i lymnarni 1 i A' 1 'i 11 RUTLAND DAILY HERALD MONDAY MORNING JUNE 29 1970 A East Beats West in Coach esGrid'Game AknL Miller Wins Northeast Amateur Big Crowds Betting At Green Mt m's RUMFORD RI (AP)-Alan Miller 21 PensacolaFla the third place finisher in last years US Amateur fired a par 69 for a 72-hole total of 280 Sunday in winning the ninth annual Northeast Amateur Invitational Golf Tournament 1 Miller the Trans-Mississippi champion who will be a senior at the University of Georgia in the fall shaved seven strokes off the Northeast record in his decisive victory on the 6583yard course at Wannamoisett Country Club Len Thompson of Lumberton NC had a closing round 71 for 285 and second place in the field of 34 starters Two-time champion Ronnie Quinn of West Warwick who trailed Miller by just two strokes after 54 holes soared to an 82 and finished far back with 295 Dick Siderowf of Westport Conn and John Gentile of Fair-field Conn tied) for third with 288s after closing with 69 and 70 respectively Pete Bostwick of Locust Valley NY had a 68 Bill Harvey of Greensboro Conn was another stroke back with 74 for 290 LUBBOCK Tex (AP) -Lights popped tempers flared records crumbled and the East beat the West 34-27 Saturday night in the Texas debut of the Coaches All-America football game The post-midnight- climax came with the West flirting with a touchdown a portion of the stadium lights blown and the players dispositions on a par with the Texas heat Charles McClendon of LSU coach of the victorious East told his warriors to forget the brief swinging kicking incident in the chaotic closing minutes of the contest Ive said everywhere Ive been these are All Americans You proved it tonight And across the way Dan De-vine of Missouri the West coach said: I think this game was a tribute to both teams The heat hurt some but the players were in excellent physical condition Temperatures hovered around 90 degrees as Ohio State fullback Jim Otis Davidsons Gordon Slade and tight end Frank Foreman of Michigan State led the East to the triumph 1 With a record All-America Coaches Game crowd of 42150 viewing the nationally telethen Bruce Taylor of Boston provided the crippling blow returning a pass 43 yards fori a tpuchdown that hike the East lead from 28-27 to the eventual outcome Slade darted five yards for the first East Touchdown but the Wests Bubba Brown of Stanford tied it up on a one-yard bolt Richard Campbell of host Texas Tech blocked a punt and tumbled on it in the end zone to push the West into a 14-7 lead Then in the space of two minutes Slade hit Foreman with the touchdown passes and it appeared the East had the West on the ropes But Shaw fired a clutch three-yard shot to Ron Gardin of Arizona on tthe final play of the first half to make it 21-21 at halftime A tricky halfback pass from John Isenbarger of Indiana to Charlie Waters of Clemson put the East back out front and then when Terry McMillan of Missour plunged in from the one the extra point attempt failed and the West was behind for keeps Sandy Ferguson Receives Indian Rowing Award HANOVER NH (Special) Sandy Ferguson a senior from Pittsburgh Pa has been named 1 the recipient of the Thaddeus Seymour Rowing Award presented annually to the Dartmouth College oarsman who has made the greatest contribution to rowing at the college Ferguson was captain of DartmouthS'lightweight varsity crew this spring The recipient in 1969 was Steve Tourek captain of the Dartmouth heavyweight varsity which will compete in the Henley Royal Regatta in England next week The award is presented in honor of the former dean of Dartmouth College Thaddeus Seymour who was a volunteer coach of Dartmouth crew in the early 1950s POWNAL (Special) -Combined two day crowds of 13524 bet $1272076 at Green Mountain Race track here Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon Summer-like weather on Sunday brought 8454 out to the track and they bet $631993 Hallucination broke in front and was never headed in the feature race Saturday but he had to be kept to a drive by jockey Michael LaPensee to hold off a rapid closing Resolute King Irish Confetti raced third It was the third consecutive win for Hallucination at Green Mt Hallucination trained by Leo Veitch covered the five furlongs in 1:004 and paid $640 380 300 Resolute King returned $980 460 Irish Confetti paid $420 French Cream bested Fairview Lass in a thrilling stretch duel to capture the Starter Handicap Sunday at the states only pari-mutuel race track Brookline raced third The Symmes owned and Leo Veitch trained mare raced the mile in 1:384 over a fast track equalling the track record held jointly by The Chief and Scheming Emma and paid $480 320 280 Fairview Lass paid $560 360 and Brookline returned $360 WERE MOVING! smashed the upset dreams of young Steve Eichstaedt with rounds 66 and 64 Sunday and won the $150000 Cleveland Open Golf tion from the gallery of about 10000 when he pitched up to within two feet on the 18th hole and knocked in the putt for a 68 That gave him a 272 total and second place good for $17100 Larry Hinson with a 66 and Devlin a one-time master Bob Murphy 68 tied for third at plumber from Australia 272 matched the course record with Three tied at 274 They were his 64 in the afternoon round of Dave Hill and Lee TrevinO each the leg-wearying 36 hole windup with a 67 and Lou Graham 66 to this rain-delayed tournament Tom Weiskopf the leader after and finished with a 72 hole total 54 holes had a final 73 and was moved in front to stay with consecutive birdies on the 14th and 15th holes He had seven birdies and a single bogey but said the key to it all was a scrambling par on the eighth hole I covered more ground on that one hold than most people do on their vacations he said It was probably the best putting round I ever had Devlin said He hooked his drive down an embankment hit the embankment coming out and the ball trickled onto the 12th tee He hit it on the green from there and saved par with a 25 foot putt That made the whole day said the 32-year-old Devlin now a resident of Coral Gables Fla the $30000 first prize pushed his earnings for the year to more than
